This past Winter, we overhauled an existing cylinder head inspection machine to the latest laser technology from Keyence.
This 2-axis gantry system uses four Keyence LK-H082 Lasers to detect and accurately profile split collars that are inserted in a cylinder head to hold intake and exhaust valves and their compression springs in place. It uses three additional Keyence IL-300 lasers to detect mounting bolts and dowels. The large number of lasers means the system is able to detect the fine details in two passes of the head, within a 26-second cycle time, as shown below.
Using National Instruments hardware components, we worked together with Butterfield Engineering in Cincinnati to setup the LabView display program on an integrated PC, that shows instant profile visuals and data scanned by the lasers.
